The
Master Gardener Program began in Washington State in 1972 by
Dr. David Gibby. He started the program whereby volunteers received
specialized training in horticulture for a commitment to spend
a specified number of hours working with the public. This was
a huge success and by 1991 was operating in 45 U.S. states,
plus 4 Canadian Provinces. Ontario’s Master Gardening Program
started in 1985, and has gone from strength to strength since,
and there are now 800 Master Gardens in 41 Chapters.
